Happy Natal Day, Honey

posted Tuesday, 4 September 2007

My god, I can't believe how quickly the last year has gone by. A year ago I did a special birthday post for my husband featuring a selection of classic rock-type songs that I thought he would enjoy, and it's already time to do it again. Next thing you know it's going to be Christmas! (Incidentally, that entry is my all-time most-read post. Ever. I'm not even going down the path of why.) So here you go, honey. Hope these are "classic" enough to satisfy.

The Allman Brothers Band--"Midnight Rider" mp3 off Live at the World Cafe Vol. 18 (buy)

Cake--"War Pigs (Black Sabbath Cover)" mp3 off B-Sides and Rarities (buy--not out yet)

David Bowie--"Rebel, Rebel" mp3 off Charlie's Angels--Full Throttle Soundtrack (buy--thanks to Ed for the info!)

Snowden--"Dreams (Stutter Fleetwood Mac Remake)" mp3 off Fuel of the Celebration (The Remixes) (buy)

Patti Smith--"Gimme Shelter" mp3 off Twelve (buy)

Solex --"Athens, OH" mp3 off Pick Up (buy) This one's not quite classic rock, but it's important for sentimental reasons all the same.

Today is also contrast podcast day (download/listen to it here), and the theme is "Mustashioed Musicians." My pick this week was Eastern Conference Champions, as two of the three band members have moustaches. I went with ECC not just because--well, you know why--but because their bassist, Vern Z., has one of the best moustaches I've seen in a long while (he's on the far right, below).

Eastern Conference Champions--"Single Sedative" mp3 off Ameritown (buy) This is a ferociously good song. You've got to believe me!

Next week's theme is "Back to School." How timely!

Are you asking yourself how the contrast podcast and my husband's birthday tie in together? Well, when my husband and I got married, he had a moustache, too.

Happy birthday, baby! Here's to another year--may it be a little less eventful all around than the last one.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Marcy!!! And why did you shave your upper lip?

I like your pick for the CP today, as always. Very cool song!

Happy B-day, Mr. MJRC. How cool is it to have a wife who posts a Cake cover of War Pigs? Damn, I'm still twitching over that one.

mjrc, let me get this straight. I'm getting a subtle vibe here that you like East Conference Champs. Is that right?

Thanks for posting the Eastern Conference Champions song and for championing their work! I'm going to order their record this week and can't wait to see them live. Heard them on Philadelphia's WXPN 88.5, streamed samples of some of their songs, and then learned more about them from your blog archives. I'm really digging these guys, so thanks!

mg--aren't they fab? i'm so glad xpn is playing them. i sure wish they'd come back to philly to do some shows. they were great at the xponential music fest, but they only got to play about 5 songs. i need more! : )

fil--mr. marcy is charmed by your tippity-tapping. : ) he also loved your intro on the podcast this week. we were talking about something and then when your intro started, we both shut up and listened. and then he said: where does he come up with this stuff? high praise, indeed! ;-)

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
