Here's what folks do with leftover pumpkins in my (red)neck of the woods: the World Championship Punkin Chunkin, also known simply as "The Chunk."
In short, people devise any kind of contraption they can think of to propel pumpkins across the universe--via air, catapults, trebuchets, torsion (what is that?), and good old human power. Whosever's goes farthest, wins. Last year's air winner traveled 3,870.50 ft.--that's more than half a mile, people. Pretty impressive.
There's music, too, although it tends toward the country--headliner this year is Jo Dee Messina--so if I were to go, it wouldn't be for the choonz.

hello lil pumpkin :) a happy halloween to you!
So basically there are flying pumpkins? That would be awesome. My mom and I
would bake stuff with our leftover pumpkin but now that I am old and Shane
is such a bah humbug about Halloween we have no pumpkins to fly through the
air or to bake.
hey, right back at ya, mia! : )
Anything that encourages people to keep building those lovely trebuchet
machines is good in my books. But what exactly is torsion in this context?
My google search only revealed the tech definition which wasn't
illuminating.
mentok--according to the stated rules and regulations: "Machine shall
consist of torsion springs, or cords that once wrapped around its axle
(pivot point) will create a stored energy.
6. Motorized winches and/ or other cranking devices may cock the machine."
i'd never heard that term before, which makes it obvious that i never took
any physics classes. but it's a good one to remember for scrabble!
