I recently did a post of
remixes and left out the
Goldfrapp because I decided they deserve a post all their own. Goldfrapp is my favorite electronica band, hands down.
Goldfrapp is Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, who write and produce everything on their records. What's so special about them? Well, Alison Goldfrapp's voice, for one thing. It can be slinky and seductive and then all high-flying and pure, with loads and loads of glam. Her scrumptious vocals are matched by the perfection of the synths and the deep, fuzzy bass lines.
This is incredibly sexy music, but if it were only about that, I don't think I'd come back to it as often. There's so much going on here, between the warmth of the sound and the sense of humor--usually tongue-in-cheek--of the videos, that it transcends the one-dimensional nature of ordinary electro-synth-dance music. They use a lot of imagery in their writing, much of it animal or nature related and all of it fantasy inducing. It's extremely well-suited to remixing, too, as evidenced by the abundance of remixes available.
You have GOT to watch the Q & A feature on their
site. To find it, click on Video, and then Q & A, which will take you to videotaped segments of them answering fans' questions. Very charming and oh-so-British.
Their next release is a limited edition 7" picture disc called
Satin Boys, Flaming Chic, with sleeve-design by Alison, which comes out Sept. 4th.
We Are Glitter, a remix of
Supernature songs, and will be out Oct. 17th. Both are UK release dates.
Goldfrapp--
"Fly Me Away (The Naughty Remix)" mp3 original off
Supernature This is a fantastic mix, urgent and much naughtier than the Ladytron one. I often play it in the car and wonder what people think when they see me . . . well, doing whatever it is I'm doing when I play this.
Goldfrapp--
"Strict Machine" mp3 off
Black Cherry (
buy) I can't decide which one I like better, the original or the remix. They're so distinct. The original is all strict, for lack of a better word, lots of dirty bass and firm beats, much more rock 'n roll, whereas the Rowan remix is gentler but perhaps even dancier.
Goldfrapp--
"Strict Machine (Rowan's Remix)" mp3 (
buy) Listen for that part where the "electricity" buzzes. Mmmm, I love that part.
Goldfrapp--
"Twist" mp3 off
Black Cherry (
buy) Um, there are images galore in this, and I swear the synths are speaking.
Goldfrapp--
"Twist (Jacques Lu Cont's Conversion Perversion Mix)" mp3 (
buy) I definitely like the original better, but this is worth a listen. And I finally figured out why remixes are so much longer--if you were on the dance floor with someone you really wanted to be with, you'd want the song to last as long as possible, so in some folks' opinions, these probably aren't long enough!
Goldfrapp--
"Hairy Trees" mp3 off
Black Cherry (although mine is from
Ultra Chilled 04) (
buy) Very mellow, ethereal and mystical compared to the rest of these tracks. More like what you'd find on
Felt Mountain.
Goldfrapp--
"Number 1" mp3 off
Supernature (
buy) This was my favorite Goldfrapp tune until I heard "Strict Machine" and "Twist." And I have yet to hear a remix that improves on it. However, if you're interested,
go here for a couple.
Goldfrapp--
"Slide In (DFA) Remix)" mp3 original off
Supernature. Don't be put off by the 12:51 length, you can get a lot done in that amount of time, whatever it is you happen to be doing. I wrote this entire post while this was playing. All right, that's a fib, but you could accomplish any number of personal goals during this.

Go here and read a Seattle show review and an interview with Alison from back in May.
Here's my fantasy--a MSTRKRFT remix of a Goldfrapp tune. If that were to happen, I could die happy. Or at least die with my groove on.
Thanks to the
rich girls are weeping, my main source for Goldfrapp goodness, and also
the yellow stereo.
