My first impulse is Bermuda, because it's close and I hear it's absolutely lovely. But I fear it's expensive and I'm not sure it's got enough variety for us. We like to hike and explore and do the nature thing. We're not golfers or fancy diners or history buffs, if you know what I mean.
Then I think, well how about The Bahamas? They're the next closest, and my brother has gone there many times and loved it. On the other hand, it's kind of, how to say, run-of-the-mill Caribbean? Do you know what I mean? I want to go somewhere off the beaten track.
Then I imagine some exotic little island like St. Lucia or Saint Martin or Antigua--but I know nothing at all about them and have no way to judge what they'd have to offer.
So, anybody have any ideas? All viewpoints are welcome, as we are starting from scratch here. My husband just suggested using the number of frequent flyer miles we have to determine where we can go. Hmmmm. Not sure that's the only criteria we should use, although it's definitely one of them.

Hey, even if you don't have any inside info on a Caribbean island, I do hope you'll enjoy the tunes.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are really lovely, and there are plenty of
little cottages and rentals that might be better for a family than a hotel.
The last time I went to the Bahamas (at the Atlantis Resort), we never left
the hotel because there was a $20 toll to get out of the stinking resort
compound. Or you could always come and visit me for a taste of island life.
:)
Hmm, are you after a "sun, sea, sand, and slob" holiday or something more
vigorous? With kids or without?
liz--hadn't considered turks and caicos. i do love that name. how awful
about that bahamas place! my brother goes to the bahamas, but he always
stays on some semi-deserted island where there's not much to do other than
eat conch and snorkel. i guess we're looking for a little more action than
that! and thank you so much for the lovely invite, but i'm looking for a
wee bit more warmth than iom can afford me. ;-)
Well, keeping in mind this was now about thirty (zoiks!!) years ago, we
flew into Tortola from Miami, where we picked up the boat to sail around.
I recall the highlight was our stopover at the Bitter End Yacht Club on
Virgin Gorda. I had a look on google & found they do have a link:
http://www.beyc.com/. Looks a bit grander than I recall!
I've been to Grenada and Barbados. Grenada was much more tropical
rainforesty and humid, mind I was there in July, and Barbados was slighlty
cooler with the ocean breeze. Both had a fair amount to explore and
beautiful beaches. In Barbados Crane beach, the locals area, is amazing.
You glamourpusses. I go to Wales, which is (1) lovely (2) about a stones'
throw from my house (although not the bit I go to, to be honest (3) *smug
alert* just about as carbon neutral as we can be.
fil--thank you for the info. i'm going to check it out. how did you know i
was the yacht club type? ;-)
Hey, don't knock Wales - beautiful country. OK, if you discount Cardiff
city centre. But Aberystwyth's most pleasant. And welshcakes are
yummy-scrummy...
you know where i've always had a romantic vision of? cornwall. i think it's
the result of all the victoria holt gothic romance novels i read as a young
girl. she set a lot of her stories there, on the moors, near the sea, with
the totally unpronounceable name of places, etc. so i would love to visit
it one day. some day. after i go to the caribbean. ;-)
Oh yes, Dearest Wife, Darling Daughter and I spent a lovely (pre-Little
Man) week in Cornwall about five years ago, staying in a cottage on a
working farm. It was wonderful! Cornwall does indeed have much romance
about it.
Cornwall is lovely and the beaches are amazing; simply stunning. I was
there in winter and can only imagine what a zoo it must be when sunny.
Actually, just a girl, we were there in early winter too, and it was
fantastic - weather was mild, and we had the whole place to ourselves!!
The weather was fantastic when I was there too. I wasn't very clear when I
meant sunny and summer equaling a big zoo o' people :)
Oh, JaG, you were perfectly clear! Indeed, it does get all zoo-ish in
summer, when holidaymakers jam the wholly inadequate main road atery into
that part of the world. That's why we chose winter to go - adequate
weather and not full-to-bursting!
mjrc - "you know where i've always had a romantic vision of? cornwall." - I
would agree actually. Cornwall does have romance about it.
