Here's a perfect example of what I was talking about the other day: I went to check out blogfresh radio to see if there was a new episode up, and who did I see on their roster of contributors but one of my favorite bloggers ever, the one and only J from heart on a stick.
Now, he's always struck me as very private, for lack of a better term, so it was kind of a surprise (and fun, for me, anyway) to hear him on the program. In case you're not familiar with his blog, he has a singular writing style that combines a wicked sense of humor with really smart, discerning taste in music, sometimes bordering on caustic (pushing the envelope, you might even say) and always thought-provoking. He takes really good pictures, too, although lately he hasn't had many up. Anyway, you can listen to him and the rest of the broadcast right here.

In unrelated news, I had a partial post written about how I was finally going to have to admit I like Beirut when I saw that mr. toad had just proclaimed his love for their latest release, The Flying Club Cup, and then I saw that Rachel at untitled had done the same. Which is great, actually, because I'm pretty sure they can both talk much more intelligently about the music than I can. So check that out, as well as this post from Linda at speed of dark, in which she interviews Brendan Bethancourt from the band Alaska in Winter, who happens to be a long-time friend of Zach Condon (of Beirut). Condon plays trumpet on Alaska In Winter's new album Dance Party in the Balkans and AIW is on tour with Beirut, so it's practically a family affair.

Lastly, I have a confession to make. I'm a feeling a little trepidatious about sharing it, as it won't win me any new friends, but I'm going to tell you anyway.
First the backstory. You may have noticed that the entire blogosphere is ablaze with the news that Radiohead is finally releasing a new studio album, called In Rainbows, and not only that, but it's available for download on Oct. 10 (yesterday) from their site for whatever price you are willing to pay for it, be it nothing or ten thousand bucks. You decide.
Well, this is really big news, and my only reaction to it is that I don't really care. Yep, I am not excited at all about this. Truth is, I'm not even much of a Radiohead fan. I'm not sure why--I think it's simply a matter of their passing me by back in the day and at this point I'm not sure I want to put in the time and effort to catch up with their catalog. I realize this is practically blasphemy for me to say (hence the trepidation) but I want to be honest with you and so there you have it.
That said, I do like this Zero 7 remix of "Climbing Up Walls":
Dearest Marcy, you are not alone!! Radiohead have never, ever, ever said
anything to me about my life. Dearest Rachel and Coxon Le Woof have both
tried to get me to unclog my ears, but to no avail. The only song of
theirs I actually like is Creep, which amounts to heresy given that the
band has al but disowned that early tune. Oh, I can hear the thought
police coming now - quick, hide me!!
Well look at that. I make three and we may need to band together for
safety.
Well, I guess I am alone in the Radiohead love, although they really did
pass me by in the 90's when everyone was apeshit over them. I came to them
late, as late as 2000. I loved "Creep," but it's "Karma Police," and "Fake
Plastic Trees" and the rest that grabbed me, and I can't really say why,
since I'm an old fart and I'm way outside their demographic. Sometimes
that happens with me. I like Granddaddy, too, and The Flaming Lips, even
though I don't think I'm supposed to. ;) I guess they'll kick me out of
The Classic Rock club or something now!
Radiohead is an eclectic taste you either love them or you just can't
understand what the big deal is. I see that I am amongst the latter. :-P
But that's ok, that is what makes it all a matter of unique opinion.
Is this the shelter for People Who Don't Really Care for Radiohead? Please
let me in! I can help board up the windows and such. Quick, we don't have
long to make the place defensible.
i'm all for a "can't-get-excited-about-radiohead club." just to be clear,
however, i don't dislike their music, i'm just not blown away by it.
Don't feel bad about Radiohead. I'm not that huge a fan either. I like some
of their stuff, but I'm not like "OK Computer was the greatest albums in
the history of albums and will forever be the greatest" Everyone has their
own opinion. That's what's so great about blogging.
Guess what? I've moved
In all the Radiohead talking, I completely forgot to mention about that
Moloko song. I remember it from way back when and was very ecstatic to come
across it again!
