I Am Not a Fitness Freak! (Although I'm Not Entirely Sure Why it Matters)

posted Friday, 18 August 2006
Someone recently called me a fitness freak. I am not a fitness freak, I said, I am a fitness enthusiast. Big difference. (I think?)
I bring this up because I do some of my best thinking while running on the treadmill. For instance, I often think of things to blog about. Now that's what I call important thinking.
Anyway, today I had the iPod on shuffle, and it came up with some great running songs. See, they need to be of a certain pace and vigor to keep me going. Especially during the third mile, when I come close to expiring but must press on. After that point, the endorphins usually kick in and I can make it to the end.
Today I thought of a couple of topics, one being "Modest Mouse songs that don't have the word "fuck" in them," but I soon realized that would be a very short list. I also thought of "songs with kick-ass drum solos" while "Born Secular" was playing. Man, I love the drums in that tune.  And then there's simply "songs that keep me motivated when I think I'm going to die," which is what this post is all about.
Death Cab for Cutie--"Why You'd Want to Live Here (live)" mp3 off The John Byrd EP (buy)
The On Offs--"Forget Your Head" mp3 off Wrong Upstairs (buy, I think, I can't find it for sale anywhere)
Broken Social Scene--"7/4 (Shoreline)" mp3 off Broken Social Scene (buy)
Modest Mouse--"Dark Center of the Universe" mp3 off The Moon and Antarctica (buy)
Juana Molina--"Malherido" mp3 off Son (buy)
The Spinto Band--"Crack the Whip" mp3 off Nice and Nicely Done (buy)
I've been trying to figure out why I reacted so strongly to being called a fitness freak. What makes someone a freak about something, anyway? Is it not being able to go more than two days without your object/activity of choice? Coz if that's it, then maybe I am a freak about the running--but don't tell anybody I said that. I KNOW I'm a freak about the music, but that goes without saying.
Thanks to: stop me if you've heard this one before, i am fuel, you are friends, village indian.
