First Snow of the Season

posted Thursday, 6 December 2007

It snowed here last night, which doesn't seem like much to blog about, but the first snowfall of the season is always kind of special. It creates such a feeling of anticipation for all that winter brings. Plus it's so pretty (at least for a day or two).

I know some of you have had snow since, I don't know, October, but around these parts, we don't get that much, so it's a reason to celebrate. It also gives me an excuse to post some snow songs. You can never have enough snow songs.

Regina Spektor--"20 Years of Snow" mp3 off Begin to Hope (buy)

Zookeeper--"Snow in Berlin" mp3 off Becoming All Things (buy)

Northern Picture Library--"Snowscene" mp3 off Postscript (buy)

Oh Astro--"Snow Queen" mp3 off Champions of Wonder (buy)

A little aside: Last night my son played in a brass ensemble at a museum Christmas party. We decided to go and watch and take our youngest so she could see Santa, etc. Well, turns out it was an invitation-only affair for members of the museum. We didn't know what to do, so we said, "But we're with the band," and lo and behold they let us in!

really love these songs, thank you.

this post makes me miss living in the midwest, and miss the snow during the holiday season.

Coming from the land of ice and snow, I can't say I like the first snowfall. I think most Canadians are on pins and needles through the fall, thinking "maybe this is going to be one of those mild, dry years, one of those freak years when it's nice for Halloween and we don't get any snow until Christmas." We do get those occasionally, so there's always hope.

So when the first snowfall comes (usually in October), it bursts our bubble and everyone thinks "ah, jeezus, not this bullshit again!"

But around about the tenth snowfall, when it gets to be a thick blanket, suitable for snowballs, snowmen and snow forts; when the trees hang heavy with glittery hoarfrost; that's when I start to get into it.

...which is right about now, coincidentally enough ;-)

where i grew up in ohio, it was on the edge of what was called "the snow belt," which was the edge of where the lake-effect snow reached. so we always got respectable, reliable snowfalls. living here, we only get really decent snow from noreasters, which are few and far between, and usually cause lots of problems because it's so much snow at one time. i suppose in your case, you'd best become one with the snow or else you will suffer at least half the year! :)

The only snow so far in So CA was wayyy up on the tippy-tops of the highest two mountains, and that didn't last past the morning after. We are doin' the happy dance tho because we got more RAIN in the storm last week than in either of the past two whole SEASONS. These are some great snow songs--I especially like that Zookeeper tune.
