It's Tuesday, so it's contrast podcast day, but I'll get to that in a bit. First a little story.
So I finally got my glasses--yesterday, actually--and I'm still getting used to them. I'm a little self-conscious because I've been wearing the same pair for the past four years, so this is quite a change. The other thing that makes me feel a little strange in them is that they're kind of, how to say, fashionable, and I am not a fashion-conscious person.
I'm OK with that. I mean, I've always valued comfort over style, but that gives me a weird feeling of not being able to carry these new frames off. Now, I know I'm probably stressing over nothing, but once you've been called "the anti-christ of fashion," you do develop a complex.
Wot? Who would call someone a horrid thing like that? Well, it was my dear mother-in-law. She said it with a laugh, but it really stuck with me. It went like this. About two weeks after my third child was born, she was here and getting ready to go out to lunch or something. She asked me for my opinion on her outfit and then laughed out loud as she said, "I don't know why I'm asking you--you're the anti-christ of fashion!" Ha Ha Ha. I'm still laughing.
Anyhoo, I'm not really still holding a grudge, but I do have that sensation that everyone is looking at me askance.
What does any of this have to do with the contrast podcast? Well, today is the second of three installments of the Festive Fifty, so you know it's going to be a really good one (go here to get it). It also made me think of two songs that Tim, the producer/creator extraordinaire of the cp, gave to me last summer when we did our CD swap. I think Tim does such a fantastic job--and it is a job/hobby, or "jobby" as it were--putting the podcast together each week that I wanted to show a little appreciation. So here are two songs I love off the CD he made me, and the second one just happens to mention "specs," which is what put me in mind of this whole subject to begin with!
I'm guessing the use of 'jobby' was intentional......but its a word that
has a meaning all of its own in Scotland........
No way, JC, she'd never wear her hair in an up-do!
jc--tim called it his "jobby" the other day, but i had no idea of the other
meaning!! i hope he doesn't take offense that i called it that! about my
mother-in-law's comment, it took me a long time to be able to laugh about
it, but i can now. well, at least a little! it still pisses me off some. :0
I would consider "The Anti-Christ of Fashion" a compliment.
Marcy, you could not possibly be more of a fashion anti-christ than I am!
Congrats on your new glasses! That's definitely on my list for 2009.
afm--i think you have to put yourself in the position of the hormonally
imbalanced, post-partum state i was in and then imagine how it sounded. you
feel so awful at that point, still fat and can't fit into your regular
clothes but sick to death of what you'd been wearing--it was a combination
of all those things that made it seem like such a rotten thing to say!
Post -partum or not (well...especially post partum!), that was a pretty
snarky comment. You'll have to photograph your new specs so we can see (no
pun intended!!). I don't wear glasses (yet) so it is hard for me to
properly relate. I am, however, frequently wardrobe challenged so will
steer clear of your mother in law! :)
tricia--i know!! that it was so soon after having the baby was really salt
in the wound. ;-) i've been thinking about updating my facebook pic, so
maybe i will take a picture. are you on facebook? and oh my yes, it was a
great cd tim made me. did you participate in that? it's a lot of fun.
