Boy, there's nothing like an impending visit from an out-of-town relative to make you realize just how freaking dirty your house actually is. The thought of grandma peering into my laundry room, not to mention the hall closet or the inside of the refrigerator, was enough to make me want to hang my head in shame and throw me into a cleaning frenzy.
And the family--my ever-loving family--jumped in and helped like never before. We got the whole family room cleaned and decorated for Christmas in one day--and I'm talking about hardcore dusting and vacuuming, not just straightening up. I am really impressed with them. Thanks, guys.

It's funny, it used to be that if I ever started to clean the house, my kids would always ask if someone was coming over, because that's about the only time I ever clean!
In our house, we call that "party clean". We have this one big party every
year (Academy Awards) when everything in the house must be perfect. Stains
that can't be cleaned are painted over ... yup, that anal. Everyone pitches
in, but the household is also run like a fascist state for the week leading
up.
oh, that's great--"party-clean." i guess ours would be "company-clean,"
only it's a lot more irregular. :)
If it were up to me - these kind of occasions are the only time the house
would get cleaned. Fortunately I have a sane partner to dictate when things
like that are getting done. Thanks for the Feist track!
