The contrast podcast theme this week is "Cities" and it's a great choice by JC. Almost too great! I had tons of wonderful songs to pick from, which, as you know, always makes it hard for me to make a decision.
I finally decided to stop thinking so much and go with my heart, which led me to choose "We're From Barcelona" by I'm From Barcelona, basically because it compels me to sing along. There's something very inviting and joyous about this band. It's probably the sheer number of them--29 at last count--but whatever it is, it makes me want to join in and be a part of whatever it is they're singing about. You can download and/or listen to the podcast right here and then you can join in, too.
I'm From Barcelona--"We're From Barcelona" mp3 off Let Me Introduce My Friends (buy)
My runner-ups were really good songs, too, of course, otherwise I wouldn't have had such a hard time picking one. Here they are, in no particular order.
The Blue Nile--"Tinseltown in the Rain" mp3 off A Walk Across the Rooftops (buy) This song makes me think of San Diego, even though it's about Hollywood, because the last time I was there I listened to it over and over again while I roamed around the city.
The Foundry Field Recordings--"Warning Raids Over Kiev" mp3 off Prompts/Miscues (buy) This song takes a little while to build, but once it does, it's beautiful and oddly powerful.
Death Cab for Cutie--"Why You'd Want to Live Here (Live)" mp3 off The John Byrd EP (buy) I love to listen to this when I work out. It really gets me going. It's about L.A., in case you're wondering why I'd pick it for a cities podcast.
Solex--"Athens, OH" mp3 off Pick Up (buy) The sentimental favorite, because that's where I went to college.
Next week's theme is "2008 (so far)." That means you get to pick a song that you think represents the best of the year up to this point, which sounds like it will be another hard decision for me to make!
God, I love that I'm from Barcelona song. It's just pure pop happiness.
i totally agree! i used to think they were just a fluff band, but i'm
liking them more and more. : )
Love it! I'm bummed that we can't comment at the CP site, though.
i know, i'm bummed about the comments thing too. tim is working on it, he
said, but doesn't have high hopes of fixing it anytime soon. i told him the
comments were half the fun of the podcast! i missed you this week, but i
know you couldn't be in it. i hope you're doing a little better each day.
it's nice to have you back in the blogosphere. : )
