There's this really cool new machine at the gym called the Adaptive Motion Trainer. It's kind of like an elliptical machine but the pedals go straight up and down instead of in an elliptical motion. The cool thing about it is that you can adjust your stride. You can do short and fast or lengthen them and sort of slowly "run" in place--all without changing any settings. You do it with your muscles.
The counter-intuitive part of the process is that the slower, longer strides burn more calories than the faster, shorter ones, even at the same resistance level. Usually the quicker you pedal, the higher the burn rate, but in this case it's the opposite, sort of like running in slow motion.
I'm not explaining it very well, but I really like it.
