It's a resounding "Yes" over at the contrast podcast today, with "yes" being the theme for this week's episode. I had a lot of fun looking for songs and found a great many to choose from, running the gamut from poppy to indie rock to electro.
So what did I pick? I decided on "Say Yes" by Los Angeles band Afternoons. No special reason, really. I just think it's catchy and upbeat and I liked it. You might say it spoke to me.
Afternoons--"Say Yes" mp3 (buy)
I like themes like this one because they often lead to discoveries, either of music that I'd forgotten I had in my library or via searches to new stuff that I find I really like.
Here are some of the runners-up (or is it runner-ups?) that came close but to which I had to say no in the end.
The Helio Sequence--"Can't Say No" mp3 off Keep Your Eyes Ahead (buy)
Voxhaul Broadcast--"Why Not" mp3 off Rotten Apples (buy)
FC Kahuna--"Machine Says Yes" mp3 off Machine Says Yes (buy)
Next week the theme will be "songs with sirens," so hopefully you will finally say yes, answer the siren call and be part of the fun.
I really dig that Helio Sequence song! I've heard of them before but
haven't really "heard" them... what an ass I was! hehe.
don't feel bad, christine, coz i thought the same thing when i found the
song in my itunes. i was like, why haven't i been listening to this?? : )
I found them on Sub Pop's site awhile back (Helio Sequence) and got
introduced via a free download of "Everyone Knows Everyone." I like the
whole "Love And Distance" album!
i think i probably got this song from linda, if i remember correctly. she
really liked their last album. i tell you, if it weren't for all the other
members of the podcast, i wouldn't know half the music i do!
I am really loving this "Say Yes" track from the Afternoons. Awesome! And I
am with you it is always so interesting to hear these random topic picks,
it can bring out some goodies you didn't know you had and some you never
knew existed. Cheers!
rachel, have you ever heard of them, afternoons? they're unsigned, so
they're probably not too well known outside of l.a. if you can believe it,
i still haven't listened to the podcast. this thing called "work" really
interferes with my music time! ;-)
