Why is it I always feel the urge to write in cliches when it comes to the contrast podcast? I suppose it's a pathetic attempt to be clever, but I don't think it succeeds very often. Whatever the reason, the cp is all about cover versions this week. The actual theme was "Cover songs that are very different from the original." Go here to download or listen to it.
I thought Marilyn Manson's remake of the Eurythmics big hit "Sweet Dreams Are Made of These" qualified. The tune is recognizable, certainly, but the snarl of the guitars and the menace in his voice are quite different than the Annie Lennox version.

I think one of the most unusual covers albums I've ever heard is Tiny Cities, Sun Kil Moon's take on Modest Mouse. It's funny, my eldest daughter is a huge Modest Mouse fan and when I would play this album she would get really angry with me and insist I turn it off. She simply couldn't stand it. This is my favorite song from it, which I've posted before, but surely it warrants another go 'round, don't you agree?

Well, it turns out there were so many submissions that this week's episode is only part 1, next week will be part 2, which is when my pick will appear! So stay tuned.
One final note. Last week I posted a link to Sarah Palin's blog, Welcome to the PalinDrome. If you checked it out, you soon discovered that it's a spoof/fake blog. It is funny as hell but quite obviously not written by her.
Well, I have found a REAL blog, written by real women across the country called Women Against Sarah Palin, and so far they have more than 140,000 responses up. You can send an email to this address, womensaynopalin@gmail.com, and tell them just what you think of her candidacy as well. It might make you feel better, and it might make a difference in November.
I love Sunk Kil Moon and that covers of Modest Mouse is something pretty
interesting. Good choice - their cover of The Ocean Breathes Salty is one
of my favorites.
I'm so glad you posted the link to that SNL skit, I read about it but
missed seeing it.
afm--thanks. i probably should have submitted a sun kil moon song but i
figured someone else would do it.
I figure Mark Kozelek will be somewhere in those covers. My favorite is
his cover of "Bad Boy Boogie" by AC/DC. I like the Manson cover too. My
selection (not one of these) won't be up until next week's CP either, so
we'll be on together!
i got kind of scared when i didn't see my song this week--i didn't realize
at first that it was a two-parter. here's to next week!
On the SNL video: I think it was a service of the skit writers to note that
it certainly must grate on Hillary, after all her years of political
experience, to be upstaged by a woman with so little substance.
