Wow, that's a mouthful, isn't it? The contrast podcast's festive fifty countdown turned out to be 54 songs, making three 18-song podcasts, the first of which is up today. You can download and/or listen to it right here.
I don't appear in this week's edition, but I'll introduce two songs next week, so please come back and look for them then. Give you something to look forward to, eh? Aside from Christmas and all that other stuff. *insert wink emoticon*
I suppose I should also reassure you that yes, I am working on my year-end lists. The song one is just about written but it's pretty massive so it will take some time to put together. The album one is still in it's bare-bones stage. I have the albums picked, but I still have to decide what to say about them. Details, really. Ha!
In the meantime, I've been traipsing around the internets and found these two very different takes on a "classic" Chrimbo tune--"Last Christmas," which was originally done by Wham!, a fact I had completely forgotten.
The first I found at your standard life and it's what you might call the mournful version, which makes sense seeing as it's covered by Erlend Oye. The second comes from the guys at digital eargasm and is by Benny Benassi, so it's pretty much a given that it won't be overly sad. Dirty, yes, but sad, not so much.
And what the hell, here's the original, which I found at random thoughts of nothingness, and then the best version, imho, made famous by Jimmy Eat World. Many thanks to my fellow bloggers for putting up such wonderful things for me to take advantage of.
Erlend Oye--"Last Christmas" mp3 off Seasonal Greetings (buy)
Benny Benassi--"Last Christmas (X-Tended Mix)" mp3
Wham!--"Last Christmas" mp3 off Last Christmas Single (buy)
Jimmy Eat World--"Last Christmas" mp3 off Swallow My Eggnog (buy)
p.s. Were you to do a search on the hype machine for this song, you'd find many, many other covers of it. **UPDATE** Many thanks to Crash, who pointed me toward this site, which has more obscure versions of this song that you could imagine: last-christmas.
You know, that song is one of those instantly recognizable 80's tunes. For
better or worse. I'm not sure if I'm happy you posted all this or not! :)
oh my god, i know. just reading your comment was enough to start it playing
in my head . . . ahhhhh!!! it won't stop! ;-)
There are some things which really should be left in the past and I'm sure
this is one of them. But...
