When I was a kid, we always tried to trick my mother on April Fool's Day and it usually involved some sort of "there's a spider on your head!" ruse. She never fell for it.**

There's no joking around today, however, as we get down to business with the first of two contrast podcast CD Swap episodes. You may recall we did this once before. This is how the swap works: if you wanted in, you had to make a mix-tape and send it to whomever Tim assigned to you along with a postcard from where you live, then you would get a CD and postcard in return. The fun part was that you had no idea who had you until you received your CD in the mail. Go here to download and listen to it--it's a really good one.
I'm sure you're dying to know who made a CD for me, and it was none other than our fearless leader, Tim! I felt so honored to be the recipient of his creation. I kind of gush in my intro this week about how special I felt and how much I loved it, so I won't repeat everything I had to say, except to say that he went all out in his efforts. The CD case (which you can see in this grouping of photos of all the contributors) was beautifully illustrated and the postcard was an actual photo that Tim took--how personalized can you get?
I had an extremely hard time choosing a song, partly because there were so many good ones to pick from and partly because I felt kind of rushed. I usually take a long time to absorb an album and in fact, the longer I listened to this cd, the more difficult the choice became. I finally chose "Empty at the End" by The Electric Soft Parade, a very catchy-yet-sort-of-sad poppy song with great, thick guitars, but I could have easily gone with at least five or six others. He called it Lost in your Postbox and I've posted the entire track list here.

I really enjoyed making my mix-tape for JC, aka the vinyl villain (it is one of my favorite things to do), and actually felt inspired once I came up with a theme. I called it North American Scum, which I think you can figure out means that all the bands were from North America (no LCD Soundsystem, though, I only stole the name). He seems to have liked it (thank you for all your kind words, JC, they made me all verklempt).
**She did believe us when we told her Olympic skier Franz Klammer was blind, though. We said the slalom gates beeped as he flew by and that's how he knew where they were. Yeah, we were mean. I did break down and tell her the truth--eventually.
thanks--my daughter took it for me coz the display screen on the camera is
broken and i couldn't see what i was doing! i can't wait to hear next
week's show, btw. i feel like i've been left hanging, you know what i mean?
: ) how are you feeling?
Oh, that's a good song, Marcy. I guess my intro to my pick from Ross's CD
will come along next week. His CD had a wide variety of artists, and I
also had a hard time choosing between my favorite five. This was a heck of
a lot of fun, and I can't wait to do it again!
thanks, linda. i thought the song tim picked of yours was quintessential
tim! : ) it really was a lot of fun. last time around, i got a cd from ross
and it was full of stuff i'd never heard before. i loved it. i can't wait
to hear your pick.
I love the CD Swap! It was so much fun to work on and hear what everyone
selected.
I feel lots better today...good enough to venture out to buy a birthday
gift for my son, who's turning 11 this weekend!
andy--is it wrong to have so much fun doing something like this? ;-)
I was the lucky one on the CD swap......Thanks Marcy.
i'm glad you like it so much, jc. i really enjoyed making it. your pick was
awesome--btk blues was my number one song of 2006. it's called that after a
serial killer from kansas city, i believe. she's feeling so down and out
that she figures even a killer would pass her by. : )
