I don't know what I was thinking when I thought this week's contrast podcast theme, "album closers," was too difficult. I've got several good ones to choose from and I didn't even make it a third of the way through my music library! Must have been my state of mind at the time.
I think I was reading too much into it, actually. Sometimes I think too hard or obsess about finding the perfect song and then I run out of time and just say forget it. Which is what happened this week.
Anyhow, Feist put a gorgeous song at the end of her 2005 album Let It Die and it's what I should have picked, so here it is. If you want to hear the whole podcast, go here.

That's Gonzales on the piano, btw, and so I dug around a bit and found this. They've been collaborating for a long time.

Next week the theme will be "my parents' music," so get out those old albums and start thinking about your choice right now. Don't crap out like I did this week.
p.s. I remember why I didn't pick "Now at Last." I posted it back in May. Oh well!
I usually dwell on the song choice, too, but lately I've given up on that
and have gone with something good...doesn't have to be "the" perfect song.
(I still get irked when people decide to make negative remarks about a song
choice. Why is that necessary???)
i know i shouldn't obsess so much about it. maybe i just needed to take a
break for a week and that was a good excuse! : )
about next week, the tricky part is that i love a lot of the stuff that my
mother listened to--lots of swing and big band stuff, so i might have more
to choose from if i go that road. i'll have to see what moves me.
The Feist closer reminds me of my all-time favorite album closer: the
Beatles' "Goodnight" off the White Album. The album is such a long,
strange trip, and coming out of the weirdness of "Revolution 9," there's
simply no other way I can imagine ending things. Maybe that's the measure
of a great album closer - when you can't imagine it ending any other way.
wshane--i totally agree about a great album closer being the only way you
could imagine an album ending. very well put! i also love the last song on
"you forgot it in people" by broken social scene, which is called "pitter
patter goes my heart." it manages to wrench my heart each and every time i
hear it.
