Do You Mind If I Contradict Myself a Bit? Or, "Hey, What's Up Man? Think You Could Turn Up the Music?"

posted Friday, 8 December 2006
I'm the first to admit that I often contradict myself, sometimes in the same sentence or thought. So I hope you'll indulge me as I do it again.
There's this band called Pela, and I like them. The lead singer's got a terrific voice, and they rock out in a really straightforward way, nothing artsy-fartsy or coy about them. I've heard several of their songs, including this one, "Lost to the Lonesome." It's got some clever lyrics, like "We should crash the party on Christmas Eve / We should write our name on any wall we please" and so on. It's a catchy tune at the very least.
Well, there's this other band called Cassettes Won't Listen, and although I'm a fan of their original stuff, I cannot, I repeat I CANNOT get enough of their remixes. They are fucking fantastic. I've posted a couple of them before (which I'll re-up because the links are dead now) but this might be the best one I've heard yet.

Oh, so what's the contradiction? It's really the music that I love on this one, not the words. Yep, I'd listen to it even if I couldn't understand the words or--heaven help me--there weren't any words at all.
Just for good measure, here's the original so you can compare and contrast for yourselves. It's a good song, I'm sure you'll agree, but the remix is remarkable.

No love for the country-song spoof, huh? Well I got a kick out of it!

Yes, well, it just took me a while to do the rounds today. And giggle I did at the country songs. My fave, however, is still Get Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth Cause I'm Kissing You Goodbye...

And the CWL remixes are sure nice and bleepy.

I love anything that mocks anything country!

And my goodness that Diggs remix is fan-fucking-tastic! Thanks.

Wow. I love both versions of the Pela song. And I am NOT a fan of remixes. I'm going to have to look into Cassettes Won't Listen.

And I forwarded your country list to my country music-obsessed friend and told her "this is why country music is so bad" to get her mad. And it worked like a charm! Hahaha.

i can whole-heartedly recommend any remix i've ever heard by cassettes won't listen. they've got a real knack for taking a song and making it more than the original. and it's not that disco-ish remix style that i think a lot of remixers fall into. that's why i like them, anyway.

poor country music, it's just so very ripe for parody, isn't it? yet it's huge, commercially. millions upon millions of people love it. it's beyond me.

thanks, fb. have you heard "the trouble with river cities"? that's another good song by pela. i take no credit for the country, but i'm glad you liked it. i laugh every time i read "if i had shot you when i first wanted to, i'd be out of prison by now." i know, i'm sick! and no, i don't know donovan woods.

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
