We Got Our Faces Made For Smiling, But We Are Weeping--Colour Revolt

posted Monday, 30 October 2006
I know this song has been posted about elsewhere, but it's so good that I have to say something about it myself. And to do so, I'm actually "stealing" what I left in a comment on someone else's blog. But that's OK, right? I mean, it's my opinion I'm using, not someone else's. It's just that what I said in it is exactly what I want to say here.
The song is "Mattresses Underwater," and the band is Colour Revolt. There's something very powerful about this song. It starts out all mellow and delicate and then by the end the desperation is absolutely palpable. The words are killer, too, the way they describe how life disappoints and wounds us and all throughout we keep hoping it'll be different somehow, yet it's not. The fact that there's no real resolution is so honest. It's perfect in its pained acknowledgment of how imperfect everything is.

The other songs I've heard by them are also marked by the contrast between the achingly beautiful melody and the intense, almost primal level of emotional release, as you can hear in this:

I was gonna post about this band... I like Mattresses Underwater, but after a couple of listens, it sounds like they're really ripping off Arcade Fire - the singing especially. Thanks for your comment, by the way. German efficiency apparently doesn't stretch to installing phone lines.

I thought Arcade Fire or Modest Mouse at first, but after a few listens, it suddenly hit me that the music was very original, and the similarities in sound were only superficial.

so i finally found my arcade fire cd, and yeah, i can hear some similarities, but there's a rawness and an edge to the colour revolt that i don't hear in the af. i can hear a tiny bit of modest mouse, i guess, but not enough to distract me. this is their first ep, i think, so if they put out a full album maybe we'll have a better sense of their sound.

Colour Revolt is from my hometown Jackson, Mississippi. They have about 5 years on me in age and the first time I heard them was when I was 12 years old. They have been a band for years and years, since their early high school days. They have released two albums under the name Fletcher. Fletcher was a very powerful and very original band, but their sound was immature compared to Colour Revolt. Jesse's lyrics and singing has always been the same though, he has always had quiet to screaming, passionate vocals. Colour Revolt is the perfect example of the development of music in a band. Their sound has matured incredibly in the past few years. I can't believe all these people saying they rip off Arcade Fire. There are similarities, but Colour Revolt has a much more raw tone. They are an incredible group of people, all very nice guys. You haven't really experienced their music until you see them live. You need to go see them live, it is like a religious experience. I am so proud that they are from my town. www.myspace.com/colourrevolt

Also: They have new songs that they play live that are amazing. They are the next step in the evolving music that is Colour Revolt. They are writing new material to record in December at Sweet Tea in Oxford, MS. You all just wait, they are the next big thing.
