Some Chrimbo Choonz For You

posted Tuesday, 5 December 2006
These are my two new favorite words: Chrimbo Choonz. I looked up Chrimbo in the urban dictionary (a reference source no one should be without, btw), and all it says is a "shorter and less religious word for Christmas." But it seems like it should mean something a bit more funky than that. And "choonz" doesn't even have an entry yet, although it's used in some definitions. It's not a hard one to figure out, I know, but I like to have things well defined.
I also really like my Chrimbo Choonz. (Sorry, I'll stop now.) There are certain songs that put me in the Christmas spirit unlike any others. Most of them are from my childhood, and many of them are jazzed-up versions of popular carols. Unfortunately, my all-time favorite music only exists on vinyl, and I no longer have a working turntable. Bummer, huh? So I can't share it with you. But I can put up a few of the others.
I suppose this post is twofold: partly it's to share some great choonz, and partly it's to try to jump-start me into higher-Chrimbo gear, coz I need all the help I can get. I think I'll spread out the goodness, though, and maybe just start out with The Roches, three singing sisters from New York City. Have you heard of them? They've been around forever.
The Roches--"The Holly and The Ivy" mp3 off We Three Kings (buy) I'd never heard this arrangement before I got this. It's for harmony lovers. Of course, all the Roches' music is for harmony lovers, as they are purveyors of dreamlike three-part harmony.
The Roches--"Christmas Passing Through" mp3 off We Three Kings This is an original by them. Lovely.
The Roches--"Deck the Halls" mp3 off We Three Kings Another original take on a classic. Fa-la-la-la-la-la.
The Roches--"Winter Wonderland" mp3 off We Three Kings If you've not heard this rendition, you must give it a listen. You'll never sing it the same yourself once you do.
For a delightfully diverse and slightly subversive mix, visit FiL over at pogo a go-go. He's got some unusual tunes to share, plus he's who I learned the word Chrimbo from in the first place.

Oh, how lovely! Thanks for this - our one and only Roches tape is all chewed up, hissy, and warbly. You've catapulted us into a digital Chrimbo present (pun intended). Thanks for that, and for the kind shout-out!

Thanks for the roches tracks - my vinyl copy's just about had it. They sound so bright & shiny here! Don't suppose you'd stretch to my favourites from the album: Jingle Bells and/or Silver Bells? Lots of thanks again, either way.

mixf2--tell you what, if you email me (look under contact me in the upper left), i'll send them to you. i feel kind of bad posting any more tracks off one album for mass consumption. usually my limit is three, and so i'm already over! : )

Ah, Marcy, beware - the Roches will come and steal all your Chrimbo prezzies... ;-)

The Roches! What a very Irish name. I'm considering doing chrimbo music too, but I'm not really thinking about it, since I won't be home for christmas this year.

no! not my prezzies! anything but that . . . ;-)

shane--i'm pretty sure they are irish, and they also sing traditional irish folk music. how would you pronounce their last name? i always say it like "roaches" but now i'm thinking i might be wrong?

you should do a chrimbo mix, coz i could use some new tunes. it's all about me, you know!

Perhaps they're of Irish ancestry, but they hail from Noo Joisey. Hence the accents on Winter Wonderland.

yes, that's what i meant, that they're of irish ancestry, not directly from the emerald isle. : )
