Christmas Is Coming

posted Saturday, 24 November 2007

Can you believe Christmas is only one month away? It catches me by surprise every year, even though it's hardly any secret that it's coming, you know? It's just that I can't get into any semblance of the Christmas spirit until after Thanksgiving and consequently I always feel behind the eight ball at this point. As though I should have all my shopping done already or some crazy thing like that. Yeah, right.

To be honest, I haven't had much Christmas spirit for the past two Christmases. Even the most mundane tasks seemed to be too much for me. I had no desire to decorate the house, inside or out, and I didn't send out any cards. That's very significant for me, actually, because I've sent them out every year until the past two.

It's not just the trappings of the season that I couldn't generate any enthusiasm for, though. I couldn't muster up any emotional response to any of the things that usually meant something to me either, like the music or the joy of giving someone I love something special. (I won't even go into the lack of spiritual or religious meaning I've felt.)

So the good news is that this year, I think I may be feeling a bit more festive and a little more motivated to do the things that traditionally provide me with "the Christmas spirit." I'm not saying I'm going to become Mrs. Claus or the Angel Gabriel or anything, but I am seriously contemplating sending out cards again, and that's a huge improvement over last year. I'd better get cracking, though, coz there are only 30 more days until the big event!

I know what you mean. I'm not much in the spirit anymore, either. I didn't even put out all of my massive collection of Christmas decorations last year, and I know I won't this year, either. I am going to blame it on my whole "simplify" movement, but really, it's just may be laziness. And we are going away for 9 days over the holiday, so I don't feel like erecting this mega-Christmas display just to tear it all down again after unpacking.

Instead, I think I'll post a Christmas song a day, starting Dec. 1. Music always soothes the soul anyway! And I never heard that Eels one before. Love it!

i think posting a christmas song a day is a great idea! i found that eels song last year and thought it was perfect for this post. i can def. relate to not wanting to put up tons of decorations when you won't even be home to enjoy them. just put up the really special ones, maybe. or the easiest ones to put away! ;-)

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
