I was thinking about something the other day while listening to Lily Allen. Yes, I like Lil. But she confuses me and I can't quite figure her out. I was trying to decide what it is, and I think it's because I can't tell if she means what she says.
More precisely, I'm looking for some real emotion from her and I'm not sure she gives it. Do you know what I mean? I'm not saying that every song has to be true or tell a personal story, that would be absurd, but I am saying that whatever the subject, I want the singer to really feel what she's singing or at least convince me that she feels something. I don't get that from her. Listen to this and tell me what you think.

Maybe it doesn't always matter. Maybe "catchy" is enough, especially with a sarcastic song like this. But I'm looking for more from her because I think she can give it.
Maybe Lil could learn a thing or two from Sia. She's someone who gives it all and then some when she sings. I love this song. I should have paid more attention to her album from last year, Some People Have Real Problems. Come to think of it, I definitely think Lil should pay more attention to Sia.
Sia--"Beautiful Calm Driving" mp3 off Some People Have Real Problems (buy)
I like Sia! I first heard her on the last episode of Six Feet Under, and I
was floored by her song that played over the ending montage. I had to seek
her out after hearing it!
Yeah I agree... There is something about Lily Allen that just doesn't do it
for me, she just falls short. Sia is brilliant most of the time, especially
Beautiful Calm Driving. That album had some real gems on
it and then it had some not so good tracks as well, which is usually the
case for Sia I feel.
I know what you mean about Lily Allen. My impression is that it's an act.
Based on her background, it doesn't rig true. Liking that Sia track,
though.
nat--i love that song, "breathe" and there's another one called
"distractions" from the first six feet under soundtrack that is amazing.
she sings for zero 7 a lot, too.
Ha, I was just musing about this very same fact (Lily and whether she's
sincere or not) in my neck of the woods. Sometimes I think she's in on the
joke, and other times I feel like she's part of the joke. I love the track,
either way.
apparently we know at least one thing is true--great minds think alike! ;-)
Hey, mjrc! I totally agree about Lily Allen. I get the feeling she's
putting on a performance, and that we're not getting anything real from
her. Even though the song is saracastic, as you put it, I feel like she's
just going through the motions. I still get caught up listening to her
thick accent, but I think if she were an American singing the same songs,
I'd listen once and move on.
