Burkina Faso and Me

posted Wednesday, 31 October 2007

I was going through my stats this month and this kind of blew me away: I have gotten more hits from the country of Burkina Faso than I have from Spain, Belgium, Norway or a whole host of other countries. To give you an idea of what this means, in my country breakdown list, BF is ranked 20th out of 113 countries listed.

I've always been intrigued by where people who read my blog come from, and this fact fascinates me in particular, as I'm pretty sure I've never written anything remotely related to BF. I mean, certainly not like I've written about Greenland (don't get me started) or Germany or even Iceland.

In fact, I had to look it up. I knew it was one of the African countries that had changed its name some time during the past 30 or so years, but I wasn't sure which one it used to be. Turns out it was known as Upper Volta, which I always thought was a pretty cool name. I considered the possibility that I'd mentioned The Mars Volta at some time, but I'm pretty sure I haven't.

Anyway, I'm dedicating this post to all my readers from Burkina Faso. Thanks for reading!

Peter, Bjorn and John--"Far Away, By My Side" mp3 off Falling Out (buy)

Willie & Lobo--"Desert Sun" mp3 off Music for the Rest of Us (buy--I can't seem to find this anywhere. It was a compilation cd from about ten years ago.)

The Mars Volta--"Wax Simulacra" mp3 off The Bedlam in Goliath (buy--this comes out in January, so look for it then.)

p.s. Did you all survive/enjoy Halloween? Word has it that Fil won second prize in his office costume party as Ozzy Osbourne. Hopefully he'll post pics soon.

p.p.s. Don't miss hearing Matthew's debut on Blogfresh Radio.

Do they all work for the African Bank of Development, do you think? I get more emails from Burkina Fasso than from anywhere else. No really, I'm sure that's where they're from. Although my new favourite is from the woman (and again I give you 'no, really') who said 'I am terminally ill and God has told me to give you all of my money. Now where's your bank account?'. There's a pacific island that seems to come up trumps regularly for me.

crash--i don't have that detailed of information, or at least i don't know where to access it from. i use a really basic program that comes with my site. about those scam emails--do you suppose anybody in their right mind actually responds to them? someone must or they would stop sending them, i'd hope. and wow, that's nervy!

ross--i think i'd be rather disappointed with my total number of hits if i subtracted out all the ones that come from myself as well! : )

What do you use to tell you where/what countries your readers are viewing your website from?

Upper Volta is a pretty cool name. I've always been a fan of the African country name Mauritania myself, since it just sounds like something powerful and yet suspiciously mysterious and dangerous...it's certainly a good name for a fictional creature in a scary story you tell your kids before you tuck them in and say goodnight.

(note this is probably why I don't/shouldn't have kids...)

my blog host, blog-city, provides it. but i know other people who use free stat counters, like sitemeter, or w3counter.com, or statcounter.com, and i think they provide that kind of data. as for scaring the kids, well, you'll probably end up scaring them by accident more often than on purpose, so that's no reason not to procreate! ;-)

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.

WANT TO GET IT BY EMAIL?

if you want an email alert any time i update the blog, you can do that here.
