Bon Iver. I've seen this name all over the place but never took time to listen. Well, don't be a dummy like me, listen to this song. It's spare and soothing, with gorgeous harmonies and a melancholic feel.
His myspace says his music is "neo-soul" and I can't decide whether he's goofing on us or he really means it. He sings in a falsetto, usually in duet with his own voice, and it has a sort of retro-sound not unlike the early soul singers (maybe Smokey Robinson?). But the music doesn't exactly radiate with soul. It's on the delicate side, with acoustic guitars and lots of lovely reverb. You can hear it stream at his website and decide what you think.
His real name is Justin Vernon, and he spent three cold months alone in a cabin in the woods, chopping wood and writing this album. In case you were wondering, you pronounce Bon Iver like the French, bohn eevair, and it means good winter. I think it also means bon musique.
