Bite the Bag

posted Tuesday, 2 January 2007
At the New Year's Eve party we went to (and I use the term party loosely), we played all kinds of games. Incredibly silly games, many of which could double as drinking games if you so desired.
We learned a new one called "Bite the Bag," which I'm told is an Irish game. Can anyone confirm that for me? You play it by getting a brown paper lunch bag, standing it up on the floor and then, while standing on one foot and not using your hands, you have to pick it up with your mouth without touching the ground or falling over. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? It really was, and I wasn't even drinking.
I'm trying to come up with a metaphor for the whole thing, but so far I'm drawing a blank.

I don't know about 'Bite the Bag', but I played a game with an Irish boy once called 'What's in the Old Man's Bag?' It was similiar, although you did it blind-folded (and yes, this could be the start of a dirty joke but really isn't although I would haved liked it to be at the time).

if it's irish, i've never played it. We're usually too busy playing a much more popular game, "Drink the Drink."

"Bite the bag" usually involves what starts out as a large brown paper bag. Because it stands a couple of feet high, the first round of the game is easy, with everyone able to pick up the bag! After the first round, a strip of about 2 inches is torn off the top, and round 2 commences! The game goes on with a strip being torn off after each round, and more people dropping out of the competition. The really limber folks (the ones who go to yoga classes regularly!) make it further into the competition. I've seen some rounds go the point where the bag is only an inch high! Lots of fun, if you don't put out your back in the process!
