Between Today and Tomorrow

posted Monday, 3 November 2008

I've been writing and rewriting this post in an attempt to talk myself down from my high anxiety, but I don't think I'm doing a very good job of it.

I thought it might help to get out of my head and look at the big picture, but that's not working either. In fact, as much as I hesitate to speak in hyperbole, I don't think it can be overstated at this point: the world will change if Barack Obama is elected tomorrow. Talk about high stakes.

Speaking of tomorrow, the contrast podcast's theme is "Change" and I don't think it's a coincidence that Tim picked it for Nov. 4th. After Tuesday, nothing will be the same. Even if McCain wins, at the very least it will be the end of the Dubya era, and that's a damn good thing in and of itself. If Obama wins, well, then history will judge us a lot more favorably than it would have otherwise and we'll finally have the change some of us have wanted for so long.

The Laureates--"Tomorrow Today" mp3 off There Are No More Gentlemen (buy)

Today, however, I can't quite think past tomorrow. I have two posts semi-written for Wednesday, one for if we win, one for if we lose. I'm really, really hoping I don't have to use the loser one!

Beyond being a change from Dubya, I am really feeling cynical about promised change. I think my wallet is going to be getting thinner, so that's the only real change I sense.

I'm not excited about this one, and haven't been excited about an election since, well, since Carter won. And then he let me down.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I thought I was for Obama, but his half-hour ad made me question the whole bandwagon everyone seems to be on. I'm not falling for the warm fuzzies. I want some substance, and the half-hour was all warm fuzzies. I'm definitely not for McCain. I think I'll write in Hillary or, perhaps, Donald Duck.

I'm voting against John Kerry in MA, and I've got the rest of the locals figured out (mostly Dems, but I'm truly tired of Kerry.)

If Obama loses, I'm afraid of all of the theorizing that will occur. "He lost because he's an African-American," will be said. Why can't it be because of his economic plan? Why not because of ANYTHING else? And if McCain loses, will it be because he's an old white dude?

Both of the guys harp that we, as a country, need to come together. Yet, in order to get elected, they draw dividing lines. I hate it all.

poor nat, you sound utterly disgusted! i can only hope that after tomorrow, when things calm down, you'll be happier with the results than you imagine you will be. : ) at least you're not letting your skepticism keep you from voting, which i think is a great thing. some people would just rather sit it out than participate, even if they don't feel excited about it. actually, your feelings pretty much mirror my husband's!

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
