Us Ohio folks have got to stick together. Oh, I know what you're thinking, you think I live in the outer, outer reaches of Philadelphia. Well I do. But I am originally from Ohio. Yep, I'm a Buckeye. So when I get a chance to support the home state, I do.
This band,
Bel Auburn, is from Ashland, Ohio (found, as they say, "in the right atrium of the state"). They describe their music as indie/electronica/pop and, as my husband says, "It's kind of trippy." I agree that some of it is, especially the slower stuff. In fact, upon first listening I thought, gee, this is the kind of music I could fall asleep to, and then I thought, well, duh, the album's called
Lullabies in A & C, so that makes sense.
The more I listen to it the more I'm drawn into it. The lead singer's voice is smooth and strong and the guitars have a nice, spacey reverb. Other times they're more driving and direct. I especially like "Just Love" and the way it builds. About halfway through the song something kicks in and it gets more intense--rather like love does, I suppose. I've been searching for the right word to describe them and I think it's texture--there's a rich, full texture to their sound without being overblown or self-conscious.

They're playing at the
Midwest Music Summit in Indianapolis this weekend. Their CD comes out August 14th on their own label, The Damselfly Records. They have a previous EP,
Cathedrals, put out in 2004. You may still be able to get it
here.
Lastly, they sure are getting some blog love (see
here and
here and
here). Pays to be proactive!
