I've Been Meaning to Ask This For a Long Time

posted Sunday, 18 March 2007

I've been meaning to ask this for a long time. Would you consider sharing some upbeat/uptempo songs with me that would be suitable to listen to while running on the treadmill? In other words, your favorite workout music?
I suppose I'm being presumptuous in assuming you work out--or for that matter that you listen to upbeat music! I hope you don't mind. I realize everyone doesn't feel the same way about it that I do.

See, I've come to need--and I mean need in the sense of "can't live without"--my exercise. It's not just about the physical aspect of it anymore. In fact, I'd say it's far more about the mental benefit it brings. If I go more than a day or two without an endorphin release, I start to feel agitated and irritable and my mood begins to darken, and god knows I can't afford that! As a result, I've made working out a real priority.

Now, if you knew me when I was younger, you could NEVER in a million years imagined that I would be such a dedicated exerciser (I don't say athlete, coz I really don't have a sport). It's only been in the last two years that I developed this passion. Came to my senses, might be a better way to put it. Anyway, now that I'm doing it, I don't ever want to stop.

So what do you say? Do you have any tunes to share? Here are a few of mine that always motivate me when I think I'm about to expire:

Death Cab for Cutie --"Why You'd Want to Live Here (Live)" mp3 off The John Byrd EP (buy)

Maximo Park --"Apply Some Pressure" mp3 off A Certain Trigger (buy)

Tapes 'n Tapes --"Cowbell (The Black Eyes Remix)" mp3 off Cowbell Single

I think the only qualification for a song to be good for running is a fairly fast, strong, thumping beat. Something you can really feel that'll take your mind off what you're actually doing.

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, always a classic. Css - Cansei de Ser Sexy is quite a bouncy album as is Outhud - one life to leave.

thank you, franko--i'm definitely going to check out the out hud. i have a little bit of css, and you're right, it's very uptempo. now, don't take this the wrong way, but i think i'll have to pass on the "eye of the tiger." too many old associations with that song! : )

Anything by Wu-Tang should do the job. Especially Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

The funny thing is that I can exercise to slow songs as well (depends on the song) but today I ran while listening to "Moby - Extreme Ways," "Earwig - Used Kids," "Nada Surf - Inside of Love" and "Lauryn Hill - Everything is Everything" to name a few

jeff-wu-tang is one band i hadn't thought of. i'll look for that song. thanks.

andy--i guess you're right, it doesn't have to be fast per se, but it can't be sad. at least, not until the cool-down phase, and by then i usually feel a bit better so i don't want to hear anything too down. have to wait an hour or two for that! : ) i'll def. check out your suggestions. thanks.

London Calling by The Clash has a great pace...so does I Feel So Good by Richard Thompson.

i like the clash, oh yeah. i also like ramones songs, coz they're usually fast and short. "i wanna be sedated" is particulary good. : ) never considered richard thompson, tho. i will look that one up.

thanks for all the great suggestions, everybody. i appreciate them all. and by all means, if you think of anything else, keep em coming! : )

Holy cow, there's a lot of good stuff here! My 2 cents would be to check out the Plastic Compliation, Vol. 1. You could hurt yourself with that one...
