Beat Radio

posted Monday, 16 October 2006
I believe I have found something to sink my teeth into. I've been on the hunt for something meaty for a while now, and Beat Radio seems to be what I've been looking for. The beautiful acoustic guitars, the gentle voice, the plaintive strings, then the harder beats, a bit more intensity and layers--you get the picture. Beauty and substance.
Take "Fearful," for example. What a lovely, loving song. I want someone to sing this song to me. I can think of a couple of people I would like to sing this song to. Please listen to the words and imagine someone you care about singing it just to you: "Be not so fearful now my love, I'll come and cover you with wings, be not so anxious all the time, listen to how the highway sings. I know the ghosts of memory are waging war inside your mind, just walk with me into the light, you will be fine."
And then there's "Everything Is Temporary." Also a gorgeously-worded song, full of longing and hope. "And in my secret heart, a revolution starts, the sun is burning through the clouds. Meet me on Sunday night, wait for the northern lights, everything is temporary now."
They can rock out, too, which they do quite nice on "Elegy." Fuzz, drums, a little chaos. Yum.
The rest of their cd is available for download at their site. I highly recommend it.

I suppose I should give you some facts about the band. According to their website: "Beat Radio is a New York based indie pop collective that played their first show in June of 2005. The band features Jim Mansfield on drums, Mike McCabe on bass, and Phil Jimenez on guitar and keyboards. Brian Sendrowitz sings, plays guitar and writes the songs." That's about all I know. They released an EP in the Spring called The Ecstatic EP, available here.
