Crazy as it sounds, this week's contrast podcast theme is "Chickens and Other Birds." I think it's going to be eclectic to say the least, and probably quite weird! Check it out here.
My choice was pretty easy, partly because of a dearth of chicken and other bird-related songs in my music library, but also because it gave me the opportunity to highlight one of my favorite singers, the one-and-only k.d. lang. I love her voice. I wish I could sing like her. Listen to her incomparable version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" and tell me you don't agree. That's right, I dare you to tell me she doesn't have a voice like a mocha latte, rich and creamy and full of texture and expression. Mmmm, I think I might have to go get me one of those and sit right down and listen to the entire album. And sing along, of course!

Next week's theme is "Money, Money, Money."
You want to hear something kind of ooky? Where I live there are tons of turkey vultures. They're always visible in the sky, circling around, looking for whatever roadkill they can scrounge up. Well, sometimes they perch on the rooftops, up to six or seven of them at a time. They are huge--and hugely ugly--and it's downright ooky to see them sitting all in a row, just waiting for the next dead thing . . .
Thought you should know, Rachel over at untitled has up an excellent post called, appropriately, "An Ode to Beck." Go check it out, and just for good measure, here's one of my all-time favorite Beck tunes:

"Ooky" - I've never heard that used outside the context of the Addams Family themesong!! We have turkey vultures out here as well, and they do emanate the heebie-jeebies, don't they??

I too am partial to a bit of Kathryn Dawn Lang. Indeed, she's one artist that overlaps both my and Dearest Wife's taste (she's not keen on either the rammy or ooky stuff...).

FiL, I am in awe! You are the only person (though I'm sure Thom Campbell probably knows too) I've ever heard who knew what the K.D. stood for.

i totally stole ooky from the addams family song. i like to think of it as a combination of icky and spooky. funny how spousal musical tastes can differ. my husband is quite the classic rock fan, although i can tempt him sometimes with certain more rock 'n' roll indie-type stuff.

Erm, not sure how I picked up what the KD stood for. But then again I often find my mental filter full of odd & mostly useless facts...

Regarding spousal musical tastes, indeed, it is odd. I managed to switch Dearest Wife onto Camera Obscura most handily, and even enticed her to a gig. Before that, last concert we jointly attended must have been Billy Bragg in London circa 1996...

k.d. lang has one of those voices that is so impossible to imagine. It's sultry and smooth in a way that I just can't fathom. Your Smoke Screen off of Drag has long been one of my favorites, despite the banjo - that should give everyone an idea of how delicious her voice is!
