I'm having trouble getting started with what I want to say about
Augie March. But not for a bad reason. More like there's so much to say. Their music is lovely, it's melodic, and I like it more each time I listen to it. "Stranger Strange" is especially entrancing.
Glenn Richards' voice (lead singer and songwriter) can be tender, with an affecting vibrato, and he uses it with great expression to caress and shape the words. He brings someone to mind, and all I can think of is a really mellowed-out Bono, but that's not quite it. And the words, they're poetry, really, not simply lyrics. (All the
lyrics are available at their site, so make sure to check them out.)
The music ranges from acoustic and simple to layered and almost orchestral with superb reverb, although it never overpowers the words or the vocals. This is a masterful bunch of musicians. I wonder how they are live? They're from Australia, and appear to be touring there for the time being. Their latest cd,
Moo, You Bloody Choir, isn't available here yet. Their 2002 album,
Strange Bird, is available on iTunes, and the rest are on their
site.
This is interesting. Their name comes from a Saul Bellow novel,
The Adventures of Augie March. Maybe that accounts for the literary quality of the lyrics. And this is sad--they lost a bandmate to an auto accident back in 2001, which might account for the melancholy aspect of their music. Whatever the inspiration or motivation, their music is moving and beautiful.

**Since I first wrote this back in May, I think I've decided "There Is No Such Place" is my favorite song of theirs. Still no word on the US release date of
Moo.
