Eine Wenig Deutsche Musik für Sie (A Little German Music for You)

posted Tuesday, 6 February 2007
I had a flash of inspiration half courtesy of the shuffle-scuffle, half from conversations with Pik, a Swiss friend of mine. I thought, Hey, let's do a little German music mix. That's about the extent of it.
Ulrich Schnauss--"Knuddlemaus" mp3 off Far Away Trains Passing By (buy) Ah, Ulrich. You make such gorgeous ambient music. It's downtempo with an emphasis on tempo, if you know what I mean.
Geschmeido--"White City" mp3 As far as I can tell, this is a bonus track of sorts. They have a new album out called Auf Wiedersehen, but I can't find a track listing. If I could read German I could tell you more. I know this much, though, this is one catchy, danceable little tune.
Wolke--"Wir Sind Da" mp3 off Susensky (buy) This is lovely piano-based music with the kind of vocals that make me wish I knew what they were singing about. Wir Sind Da means something along the lines of "we're here."
Wolke--"Völlig Fremder Ort" mp3 off Susensky Pik says this song is about "losing control with someone, like losing the floor under your feet while holding hands, closing your eyes in the free fall and then waking up in a completely foreign place." Isn't that the best description of a song?
Peter Gabriel--"Here Comes the Flood (German)" mp3 Technically not German, but still germane. Also, this is not the best recording but it's worth it for when he gets to the chorus and sings "Ja! jenz kommet die flut".
Thanks to young Henry for help with the German.

hey, everybody--sie sind willkommen! is that right? aside from asking my son, who's taking first-year german, i go to dictionary.com to translate stuff, but i don't think it's always correct. like, i tried to translate what shane said and it came back with nothing, so i'll ask my son. rachel's i actually understood myself. ;-)

p.s.--this working think is seriously cutting into my time--hope you all didn't think i was blowing you off! : )

thank you marcy! that's kind of a literal translation - like you are welcome (to germany). basically you could say bitte schoen - bitte being a word you can use almost anywhere... I said well done - but like someone with a strong berlin dialect would say it ;) eg, all 'g's become 'j's.

Just to clarify: I'm guessing, shane, you mean 'j' as it is pronounced in German, i.e. like an English 'y'?

shane--so it's as though i were standing at the airport, officially welcoming visitors as they deplane? ;-) when i read what you wrote and replace the j's with g's, i understand the "gut". i didn't know they used apostrophes in german, tho.

fil--i forgot to ask if you enjoyed your bratwurst and weisswurst--what is weisswurst?

FiL - yup. I mean, jup.

marcy - exactly - and sorry to be difficult, but i think the berliner dialect is really funny, and kinda cool.

And I've never eaten weisswurst, it sounds... interesting.
