I find myself drawn to this fella
Ulrich Schnauss. He describes his music as shoegaze/electronica/down-tempo. I'm totally into the down-tempo thing.
His music is lush and orchestral with an electronic feel. It's classical and oh-so-modern at the same time. Very relaxing. He's working on his third CD now, although he's certainly a busy guy what with all the remixing and collaborating he does. He's done remixes for Sia, Mojave 3, Depeche Mode and a host of others, including an upcoming one for Coldplay.
I have a mix-tape with "On My Own" on it, a lovely song with vocals that float over the propulsive rhythms and chords, and each time I hear it I think, ooh, this is good. So I did a bit of searching and found a few other goodies.

"Leise Toene" mp3 off a compilation disc he worked on (his site says "Leise Toene" but the id tag comes up "Gesang Zur Nacht," so I don't know what its real name is. It is a truly odd reworking of a Brahms tune, though, that's for sure.)
It's funny. The first few times I heard "On My Own," I thought it was a TV on the Radio song. Mostly because on my mix it follows "Staring at the Sun," but also because it has the same kind of vibe going on and the initial chord progression sounds like TVOTR, as well as when the vocals kick in, what with the high male voice and all. Like I said, it's probably just something that strikes me as such, but who else can I tell about the weird musical connections I make in my muddled mind? (If you'd like, you can
go here and download "Staring at the Sun" and compare for yourself.)
Ulrich Schnauss has more downloads on
his site, check them out. And does he have a
myspace? Of course!
