This week, the contrast podcast's theme is "1967" (listen/download here). I think I failed to mention it in last week's post. Sorry about that. So before I forget, next week's theme is "Young," in solidarity with Tim, the podcast creator extraordinaire.
My pick this time was a bit of a stretch, I admit it. Here's the logic I used to choose it. I didn't want to do something strictly by the rules (god forbid) and pick a tune from 1967. I was determined to be creative. So I thought, why not add the numbers in 1967? They add up to 23. I searched for a good song with 23 in the title, and the only one I had was Blonde Redhead's "23," which isn't one of my favorites and besides that, most everyone has heard it already.
So I thought, let's add 2 + 3, which gave me 5. I searched my library for songs with 5 in the title, and came upon "Take 5" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Perhaps it was put out in 1967, I hoped. Well, it wasn't. However, I did find out that the Dave Brubeck Quartet broke up in 1967, and voilà! I had my connection to the theme. It all makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

Check out this video from 1961. The drummer, Joe Morello, is especially fantastic, in an extremely cool way. Dave Brubeck is still alive, btw, and still performing. Here's an article about his most recent appearance, just a few weeks ago in Boston.
I acquired Brubeck love through my dad, who saw Brubeck in concert while he
was in college in the 50's. And I love your roundabout way of getting to
1967! (I took the easy route, but I was so totally in love with my radio
that year that I didn't have any trouble at all thinking of several songs
to use.) Love live Dave Brubeck!
it's funny, i'd always loved this song and knew i liked dave brubeck, but i
didn't put two and two together until a couple of years ago. better late
than never, i guess! and i used to listen to CKLW, an am radio station out
of windsor/detroit, which came in clear as a bell even though i lived in
cleveland. (number verification: 2+3!) : )
mjrc, this was very contrast-y of you. One of my all-time favorite albums
and jazz musicians.
I only heard this song 2 times before...a few weeks ago on the radio, and
at my piano lessons. I loved the song. My piano teacher said who it was so
I went looking for and mp3, and I found your blog! THANX!
